Teaching
Higher education serves a multitude of aims, including career training and the preparation of students for full and satisfying lives. Arguably, the highest purpose of higher education is to help achieve a more sustainable society, in which diverse human communities and the ecological systems within which they are embedded both flourish.
A form of experiential learning known as service-learning can be a powerful way to meet all of these goals, and most of my courses employ a strong service-learning component. Through interactions with community partners, students can deepen understanding of course content, hone diverse skills, directly experience the interconnectedness of human and ecological systems, and explore their sense of citizenship in society and the greater web of life.
